La Roche-Posay is known for its affordable yet effective products that can be easily found at most stores. We liked how quickly this moisturizer absorbed into the skin — our tester says it feels lightweight and isn’t noticeable on the skin. It also worked as advertised, mattifying the skin and removing any excess oil. The brand’s similar Toleriane moisturizer, which made our list, received slightly better scores because the tester for the Effaclar thinks this version was almost too mattifying. “My face does feel a little tight,” she said upon testing it. For anyone with extremely oily skin, though, that might be a huge plus.

Cetaphil Pro Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30

A handy drugstore pick, Cetaphil makes excellent bare-bones products, like this no-fuss moisturizer, which will do exactly what it’s supposed to — no more, no less. “The product reduced oil while adding a significant amount of hydration and moisture,” says the tester. It even has SPF 30 for anyone who loves a good all-in-one product. But its greatest asset is also its biggest weakness — it won’t plump your skin or give you that coveted glow; it simply just reduces shine and oily while also keeping your skin hydrated and protected from the sun (I mean, that’s nothing to scoff at, though, in our opinion). The tester even went as far as to say, “My skin looked a bit dull.” This would be an excellent pick for anyone who wants something simple that does the job well and can be easily layered with other products, like a Vitamin-C serum for extra glow.

Summer Fridays Cloud Dew Oil-Free Gel Cream Moisturizer

The creator of one of our favorite face masks, Summer Fridays impressed us with this oil-free gel-cream moisturizer. With three different types of hyaluronic acid and ceramides, the moisturizer noticeably hydrates and plumps the skin. The infused pineapple enzyme softens, smooths, and evens out skin tone, while the addition of amino acids will provide protection from environmental stressors. And even though it’s jam-packed with moisturizing ingredients, it won’t leave you looking overly shiny. “My face appeared less oily while still remaining glowy,” says our tester. The absorption speed gave us pause, though. While the tester describes it as absorbing “pretty easily”, she thought it still “left a slight residue.” It redeemed itself eventually, however. “As I waited more time it dried up nicely,” she added. For anyone who doesn’t aim for speed with their skincare routine, you might appreciate the more decadent texture that absorbs slowly and surely.

To begin, we researched the top rated moisturizers for oily skin. After conducting some online investigation, we were able to come up with a list of 29 top-reviewed moisturizers. Using advanced technology, our testers measured their skin’s moisture levels before and after use, noting any significant changes. Then, our testers rated each of the 29 moisturizers on a scale of 1 to 5 for four important categories: Feel, absorption, oiliness, and overall appearance. Texture

Moisturizers come in a variety of textures. There are gels, lotions, balms, oils, and more. For those that struggle with greasy-looking skin, you want to opt for something lightweight because a heavy, thick cream will only amplify your oil concerns. Can I skip moisturizer and just use sunscreen if I have oily skin?

According to Batista, both a moisturizer and sunscreen are necessary steps in your skincare regimen. “Moisturizers provide benefits that protect your skin’s moisture barrier, creating a cocoon that insulates humectants on the skin and prevents the environment from drying your skin out,” he explains. “Sunscreen, on the other hand, is intended to provide UVA and UVB blockers, preventing harmful rays from penetrating the skin."

Batista advises that while both are crucial, it is possible to use hybrid products that both moisturize and protect your skin from the sun. But he notes that you shouldn’t be using a dual product at night as it can block your pores and lead to breakouts.

How much moisturizer should I use on oily skin?

“As a general rule, a walnut size amount of moisturizer is enough for your face, neck and décolleté,” says Batista. “The best method to ensure you are always applying the right amount of moisturizer is to place a pea-size amount along the forehead, cheeks, neck, and décolleté.”
