Getting dressed is a process of trial and error that never gets easier. By the time I have an outfit picked out, I only have mere minutes before I need to rush out the door. Plus, I’m kind of a lazy blob and will never be that girl who always steps out in freshly steamed or ironed clothes — regardless of how much I want to. But that’s not to say that I look disheveled; my clothes often look dry-cleaned when they’re not. My trick? A three-minute session with my $14 Conair Fabric and Lint Shaver.

After I’ve gotten dressed, I run my hands over my outfit to feel for any snags, lint, or pilling. Then, I take the Conair shaver, pick one of three distance levels, pull the fabric taut, and go to town on shaving. The whole process takes mere minutes and is the difference between just an outfit and one that looks like I sent it to the dry cleaners.

I have the $14 AA battery-operated version, but there’s also a $36 rechargeable alternative. I’ve had my shaver for a year and haven’t had to replace the batteries yet, so the former’s been good enough for me. The Conair Fabric Shaver is pretty straightforward and foolproof, even for someone who’s accident-prone with electric tools. The only button turns the device on and off, while the closeness of your shave can be adjusted by twisting the head.

I keep the Conair Fabric Shaver on a table by my front door to zhuzh myself up before heading out. I use the closest setting on T-shirts and other more resilient fabrics like cotton and the medium distance on all other fabrics. On the rare occasion that I use it on something exceptionally fragile like silk, I start on the furthest setting and adjust as needed.

The shaver has given new life to old sweaters I assumed were in their final days and made me look like a pristine, put-together adult who uses a steamer and iron. Head to Amazon to shop the $14 Conair Fabric Shaver and Lint Remover or opt for the rechargeable version for $36.
