If there's one pairing we can count on surviving the Hollywood divorce epidemic, it's the bona fide It couple Victoria and David Beckham (knocking on all the wood). Between fashion week appearances, sweet Instagram tributes, and pitch-side seating at football games, they're a couple we can count on to always put their love on display. But things weren't always rainbows and butterflies for the husband-and-wife duo. In fact, the pair is looking back at a difficult time in their marriage: David's 2004 cheating scandal.

When the football star started playing for Real Madrid, two women (one of which was his personal assistant) came forward alleging that they were both having affairs with David, according to Vanity Fair. Over the years, however, David and Victoria have always denied the claims. Now, in his new Netflix docu-series, Beckham (which dropped on the streaming platform on Wednesday), both David and Victoria are opening up about the "hardest period" of their marriage.

"It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us," Victoria said in the show, per Entertainment Weekly. "Here's the thing — we were against each other if I'm being completely honest."

Victoria and their family relocated to Spain to be by David's side, but the scrutiny only got worse after their move when the family was constantly hounded by paparazzi. "It was a nightmare," Victoria recalled. "From the minute we opened, the press were there in cars and everywhere we went, we were followed."

She continued, "You know, up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected. We had each other. But when we were in Spain, it didn't really feel like we had each other either. And that's sad. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was an absolute circus — it's really entertaining when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you're in it."

Elsewhere in the interview, Victoria admitted that she resented David for being the reason the family had to uproot their lives. "It was probably, if I’m being honest, the most unhappy I have ever been in my life. It wasn’t that I felt unheard because I chose to internalize a lot of it because I was always mindful of a focus that he needed.”

David also spoke about the turbulent time, saying he wasn't sure how they survived as a couple. "Victoria is everything to me," he said. "To see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we're fighters and at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for. But ultimately it's our private life."

"There were some days I would wake up, and I would think, 'How am I going to go to work? How am I going to walk onto that training pitch? How am I going to look as if nothing is wrong?'" he recalled. "I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes."

The four-part limited series is available now for streaming on Netflix.
