I am not the first nor will I be the last Black woman to say that I am skeptical as all hell when it comes to haircare products.
Between the trauma of "trained" stylists allegedly not knowing what to do with my hair for years, and having to drive to the neighboring city to find suitable products for my texture, believe me, I'm not quick to trust anyone — or anything.
So whenever I spot a drugstore brand that claims to work across textures, my first reaction is always "lol, yeah okay." That said, I'll always look at Dove as the exception. Besides leading the charge with The Crown Act, Dr. Elyse Love, one of my go-to dermatologists, is also backing the brand's latest haircare launch, so I knew I'd be in good hands.
I first tried the Dermacare Scalp collection at a press event in New York City. My hair was dirty — I skipped wash day on the weekend, since knew I would be going to the salon the following Tuesday — which was both gross (for obvious reasons) and good, because I could really put the products to the test.
After a quick session with Dr. Love, she recommended I try the Dryness & Itch Relief duo, so I did.

Most shampoos tend to leave my hair feeling like crap, but this one was surprisingly moisturizing, as was the conditioner. Style-wise, I ended up getting a blowout that day, so I didn't really get to see how the products meshed with my hair in its natural state. But the brand was kind enough to send me home with samples, so I used them both on my next wash day after my hair had been abused by the indoor heat, plus whatever foolishness was happening outside, and baby...
My hair felt like butter.
Honest to God, after shampooing (I usually co-wash), detangling in the shower typically takes the strength of myself, Jesus, and his 12 disciples. But I was able to easily run the comb straight through my hair this time around.
It was the quickest wash day of my life.

Oh, and of course, I've got to let you know how my scalp felt.
Let's just say in the wintertime, if it's not snowing outside, my dry scalp will happily volunteer to create a light dusting. But after I got out the shower, it felt fresh, clean, moisturized, and most importantly, free of those annoying tiny white flakes.
So next time you've gotta make a drugstore run, add Dove's Dermacare Scalp line to your cart — I promise you will not regret it.
