Two hues stood out at the 66th annual Grammy Awards: red and black. In Western culture, these colors often carry ominous connotations, but celebs threw color codes out the window and took these devious shades to elevated heights.

After a few years of sleepy red carpets, it's no wonder that stars flocked to dramatic shades. As Fashion historian Ryan Yip told Instyle, "Red is [usually] associated with seduction and sexiness, but I think this year's trend's usage is to give vitality or a reminder of vitality, like a wake-up call to remind us that we're still alive." Black, on the other hand, is synonymous with formality, signaling an air of serious sophistication.

Early on in the evening, the Grammys step and repeat was flushed with various red looks including Laverne Cox, who wore a red hot Comme des Garçons look from her vintage archives. Singer Dawn Richards was giving Giving Tree realness in a ruby couture gown from Khosrov that branched out to the heavens with silk-wrapped branches and leaves. Kylie Minogue also had us seeing red in a Dolce & Gabbana gown that channeled major Padam Padam vibes.

Celebs who joined the dark side in not-so-basic black included Paris Jackson in a torso-baring dress from Celine and Lenny Kravitz in a Rick Owens creation that featured a sheer top with leather shoulders and skinny pants. Gracie Abrams kept things chic in a sleek Chanel look, and Janelle Monae donned a custom Giorgio Armani Prive black bustier gown with a plunging neckline entirely embroidered with black paillettes. Last but not least, Caroline Polachek combined the best of both worlds with a vintage Oliver Theyskens black gothic gown that featured a bleeding heart motif.
