Black Redefined

There was nothing ordinary about the black dresses we spotted on the 2012 Emmys red carpet: Edie Falco worked the illusion trend in a metal-belted black gown with a white train, January Jones wore Zac Posen's voluminous striped stunner, while nominee Amy Poehler opted for a beaded black halter dress with flapper flair. Conclusion: Black is back-as long as it's not boring.

Whether it was incorporated subtly or splashed from head to toe, orange was the color of the carpet for a number of small-screen sirens. Ginnifer Goodwin (in Monique Lhuillier) chose a white gown with apricot embroidery, Leslie Mann (in Naeem Khan) contrasted a white embellished top with a marigold skirt and Padma Lakshmi (also in Monique Lhuillier) committed to the hue in a clementine mermaid gown and matching jewelry.

It wasn't the Grammys, but that didn't stop the ladies from going rock and roll in scallops and sequins. Lucy Liu's Versace metal (yes, metal!) column boasted top-to-bottom loops, Connie Britton's Andrew Gn halter sparkled with silver sequins and a contrasting gold belt, while Kerry Washington's rose-gold beading gleamed on the red carpet.
