Actor Andy Samberg is well-known for his role as Jake Peralta in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and, of course, the hilarious digital shorts he made during his time as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Most recently, Samberg was named co-host of the upcoming 76th Golden Globe Awards (along with Sandra Oh) on Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. ET.

But what about who will be by his side on the red carpet? Chances are high you’ll spot Samberg’s wife, Joanna Newsom, next to him, but who is she?

If you didn’t know, Samberg’s other half is wicked talented in her own right. An accomplished songwriter and musician, Newsom plays the harp, a talent she has showcased on four albums with the most recent being Divers in 2015. In a September article for NPR, writer Liz Pelly wrote of the “distinct femininity” in Newsom’s work, noting: “Listening to Newsom's work viscerally feels like hearing an artist born out of time, but who, in turn, sounds utterly timeless.”

Newsom has also tried her hand at some acting roles, including one acting and narrating in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice in 2014. For Newsom, Inherent Vice was a role with which she was unfamiliar but excited to explore.

"It was entirely new for me," she told Entertainment Weekly. "Really fun and amazing for that reason, and scary for that reason — but it was a brand new thing in my brain."

But despite the overlap in their careers, Samberg has said he wouldn't collaborate with Newsom, namely because he admires her talent too much.

“As a fan of what she does, I wouldn’t be really psyched — if I was not her husband — to see her do that kind of thing,” Samberg toldi News in July. “Her work, for a lot of people, is really meaningful and she’s brilliant in a way that I feel like almost no one else is; it’s such a specific kept space that only she occupies, and I would fear ruining that.”

The couple was married in 2013 and welcomed their daughter in August 2017. Samberg reportedly had a crush on Newsom before they were introduced, according to Us Weekly. And it would seem Newsom wasn’t far behind in matching her admiration for her spouse.

“He’s my favorite person in the world,” Newsom told Larry King in a 2015 interview. “He’s the person I would most want to hang out with at any given moment.”

She added: “He’s probably the biggest superfan of my music.”

You can spot Samberg and Newsom — as well as all of the stars you love — during the red carpet televised event that will precede the 2019 Golden Globes. Last year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) also featured live coverage on their Golden Globes Facebook page.
