Michael Bublé’s Mom Said She’d “Kill Him” If He Didn’t Marry Emily Blunt

Who: Golden Globe-winning actress Emily Blunt, 38, and Grammy-winning singer Michael Bublé, 45.

How They Met: Blunt and Bublé met backstage at one of the singer's concerts in 2005. And so followed an era of quintessential mid-aughts red carpet appearances.

Why We Loved Them: For a time, they were really in love! They danced at charity galas, gushed over each other's talent …

Blunt, who was best known for her supporting performance in The Devil Wears Prada during the bulk of her relationship with Bublé, told W Magazine that she was happy her boyfriend was more famous than she was.

"It's harder when you're the one emasculating [your boyfriend]. I've done that, and it doesn't work," she explained. "If someone is not fulfilled in what they do and you're a successful girl, it will work against you."

That same year Blunt told People that she'd "get tears in my eyes" when watching Bublé perform. "It's overwhelming."

Bublé was overcome by a similar sensation when he'd watch Blunt's projects. "Every time I see her onscreen, I fall in love with her all over again," he said.

When They Peaked:

The only person who loved Blunt more than Bublé was … his mom?

Amber Santagà told People that if her son didn't marry Blunt, she'd "kill him." (Rest assured, he's still alive and well.) "But we'd find someone in the family to marry her because we're not letting her go, ever," Santagà continued. "She's just the best thing ever and they're perfect together."

The Breakup:

Less than a year before Blunt and Bublé's 2008 split, a woman came forward with photos of both a shirtless sleeping Bublé as well as images of herself posing with the singer, claiming she'd been in a sexual relationship with Bublé for 10 years.

The woman in question even alleged that she and Bublé had had sex in the Vancouver apartment he shared with Blunt.

The following July, Bublé's rep confirmed that he and Blunt were "no longer a couple."

Just two months later, the singer told Entertainment Tonight Canada that the couple's conflicting schedules were to blame for the split.

"In my business it's tough to go out with another artist because you're never together," he said. "You're lucky if you can see the person once every two to three months, and with Em, she was on her movies and I was doing my thing so it made it more difficult."

He gushed over his ex, calling her "a substantial person," adding that she was a "top girl, top class."

Reasons aside, the breakup was tough on Blunt, who admitted he'd "curl up in a ball and cry" following the split. "I'm not kidding. I'll just cry."

In fact, Bublé spoke about the breakup often. In a 2011 interview he said the relationship ended "through both of us being young and naive and making silly mistakes." He admitted that he "fucked up" and that he was "devastated" when it was over.

"I knew if I didn't change I would never be happy or content in my own skin with who I was," he went on, revealing that the split inspired him to seek out therapy. "It was the worst thing that ever happened to me and the greatest thing that ever happened to me."

Two years later he told Nightline how the split affected his sense of self.

"It's not just about love. It's not just about heartbreak. It's about ego. Your ego is destroyed," he said. "Every grocery store I walk in, I'm on the cover of magazines, and I was getting the blame for it. No one knew the real story. No one will ever know the real story. That's not their business to know."

Blunt has not been nearly as forthcoming about the breakup in the 13 years since, but she was coaxed into briefly discussing her ex while speaking to Howard Stern in 2015.

"You were perfect together," Stern told Blunt, to which she replied, laughing, "I don't know if I was perfect with him, but we had a good time."

When Stern brought up Bublé's mother, Blunt told him she "loved" her ex's family. "Still do."

Attempting to elicit a response, Stern stated, "he was not faithful" as a matter of fact. Begrudgingly, Blunt said, "Well … I don't know, it's complicated," before telling the radio host, "I never talk about it. I never want to talk about it."

After that interview, the Bublé cheating rumors swirled once more. The singer set the record straight in an interview with ET Canada the following month, telling the outlet, "Emily is a beautiful and loving person, and I'm grateful for the time I had with her, for the relationship."

"It didn't end because of cheating," he clarified. "It ended because we weren't right for each other, and we are now exactly where we're supposed to be in our lives."

Bublé later told eTalk that he'd been a "jerk" in his younger years and was "careless and reckless with the hearts of women I was with."

Where They Are Now:

Blunt wed Office star John Krasinski in 2010. They welcomed daughter Hazel in 2014 and daughter Violet in 2016.

The actress's latest, the much-awaited sequel A Quiet Place Part II (directed by Krasinski), opens in theaters on Friday, May 28. Blunt also stars in Disney's Jungle Cruise opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Bublé married as well, tying the knot with actress Luisana Lopilato in 2011. The couple shares three children: Noah, 7, Elias, 5, and Vida, 2.

The singer released his tenth studio album, Love, in 2018, and is currently gearing up for the 2021 leg of his ongoing An Evening with Michael Bublé tour.
