Chrissy Teigen Thought Her Card Would Get Declined on a Date With John Legend

Before Chrissy Teigen was a model turned mom and bona fide mogul, she was like everyone else and struggling with her bank account. In a very relatable new snippet, Teigen explained that once, she feared her card would get declined when she was just 20 years old and out on a date with her now-husband John Legend. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Sundance Film Festival to discuss her new show Chrissy & Dave Dine Out, she explained that the situation involved a very expensive drink and an even more expensive restaurant.

“I took John [Legend] to Jean-Georges when I was 20 years old, and I remember the margarita that he ordered was $58,” she said. “I was just blown away when it came out. It came out on a little dish and had little salts and everything.” 

“My heart broke because I knew then that my card would probably decline,” she continued, though she didn't mention why she was paying and not Legend (did they really split the check?). “I ended up going to the bank and getting cash because I was so, so scared that it would decline, so I ended up getting out like $800 cash.”

Teigen admits that she'll never forget that specific meal (she called it "beautiful and wonderful") or the moment — though for some very different reasons.

“But the fear that went into having it … oh my god, I’ll never forget that feeling in my entire life. It was terrifying,” she added. 

Fans may remember that the two met on the set of Legend's music video for "Stereo" back in 2006. Now, post-financial scare, Teigen and Legend share four children: Luna, Miles, Esti, and Wren.

Teigen has previously opened up about her financial difficulties as an up-and-coming model, saying that at one time, she had no bank account and no credit card.

“I had no credit cards, I didn’t have a bank account,” Teigen told Vanity Fair. “I knew exactly how much it was with tax to get a McDouble and fries."
