After years of perfecting our minimalist wardrobe, fashion is officially trending away from the super understated. Social media honed in on the Mob Wife aesthetic while award shows have been dominated by vibrant hues like cherry red and highlighter green. And it wouldn’t be a true era of maximalism without a sequin or two.

Sequins have been worn by stars like Amal Clooney and Anne Hathaway — and pretty much everyone at this summer’s Renaissance tour. With the help of Chrissy Teigen, I’m officially convinced that sequins are the new neutral, and I need to get on board.

In a recent Instagram post, Teigen combined three of the winter’s hottest trends, and I kind of want her entire outfit. The star wore a fully monochromatic lilac look — the unofficial ‘It’ color of this season — that played with shape and texture. At the outfit’s base was a glitzy mini dress covered in sequins. The show-stopping piece featured a low-cut cowl neck, lace underlay, and a scalloped hem. To finish it off, Teigen made it winter-approved in the most 2024 way: by layering on a seriously oversized blazer that juxtaposed her mini dress

The entire outfit was a maximalist dream, from the color and texture to the contrasting proportions, but of course, I have my favorite piece — and yes, it’s the dress. The sequined-mini managed to be playful, sexy, and chic without feeling like too much of anything. The dainty lace trim contrasted the glitz while the straight silhouette balanced out the slinkiness of the seriously short dress.

Teigen also gave a masterclass in making the sequin style more practical by pairing the party-ready dress with a structured coat. The oversized blazer is so polished thanks to the notched lapel and double-breasted closure, and it added sophistication to the flirty dress. And though she chose to keep it all in the same color family, you could tone down the dress even more with a more classic color. It might very well be the easiest way to turn your favorite going-out dress into a fun date-night look.

I’m fully ready to leave minimalism behind, and Teigen’s sequined dress just made it to the top of my wishlist — I may or may not be wanting to recreate this look for Valentine’s Day. If you’re ready to embrace the over-the-top trend, you can shop inspired styles below.
