As much as I love trying new, exciting trends, I always return back to basics. There’s just something so rich-looking about a good-fitting pair of blue jeans, classic white sneakers, a camel-colored bodysuit… you get the point. Closet staples never lead me astray, always doing exactly what I need them to — and based on Eva Longoria’s recent ‘fit, it looks like she’s in agreement with me.

Longoria attended the Opening Night Party of the MIPCOM convention in Cannes, France wearing an all-black ensemble. While many celebrities opted for loud prints and bold looks, the actress went with a simple button-up shirt. The toned-down separate featured a silky, sophisticated material, complete with cuffed sleeves, a sleek collar, and an open neckline.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worn a similar style (I’m wearing an oversized button-up as I type this). It’s one of the easiest pieces I own, and can be dressed up or down whether I’m attending a business meeting or morning coffee date, or enjoying a slow day at the local bookstore. My favorite way to style the button-up top is with a pair of straight-leg denim, some loafers, and red lipstick. If I’m feeling extra stylish, I’ll layer the top under a cashmere sweater vest, throw on some trousers, and add a pair of my favorite knit boots. No matter how the style is worn, button-up shirts are down-right stylish and modern.

Longoria and I aren’t the only ones who are all about the simple style basic. Taylor Swift has been spotted wearing the classic piece, Reese Witherspoon is all about the easy look, and Cindy Crawford basically wore the same luxe version as Longoria. Gigi Hadid even proved it’s a stellar option for achieving the stealth wealth allure, especially upon coordinating the button-down with comfortable flats and big pants.
