Suki Waterhouse's 2023 Met Gala Hair Channeled an "Effortlessly Romantic" Brigitte Bardot

Celebrity stylist Candice Birns talked to InStyle exclusively with all the deets.

Suki Waterhouse hasn't been spotted on the Met Gala's red carpet in years — not since she stole the show in a frothy, dusky-pink Burberry gown in 2014, to be exact. But the singer and actor, who's currently starring in the hit Prime Video series, Daisy Jones & the Six, proved that it was worth the wait with her beauty look alone. For the 2023 Met Gala, she arrived on the red carpet sporting her signature fringe, which complemented her romantic floral dress perfectly.

The hair was the work of hairstylist Candice Birns, who frequently collaborates with Waterhouse. InStyle spoke with Birns to learn more about what inspired this look and what she used to create it. Here's what you need to know.

The inspiration for the night Birns says was an exaggeration of Suki's signature look, an "effortlessly romantic and cool Bardot." Birns added, "The best part of working with Suki is she’s naturally cool and easy and she has great taste. It falls in alignment with my taste we work in tandem well."

Getting the look was pretty simple. Birns started with wet hair and combined a nickel size of the TRESemmé One Step Blowout and one pump of the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum to prep Suki's strands for the ultimate blowout. Then, she spritzed on the TRESemmé One Step Volume Mistat Waterhouse's roots and all over the scalp. For added volume, Birns used the TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse.

After blowdrying, so that hair is about 80% dry, she then sectioned off her strands (minus Waterhouse's wispy bangs). Using a round brush, Birns wrapped the hair away from her face and held it for 30 seconds against a hairdryer. Once complete, she then twisted the hair back towards the face to release it from the brush. She repeated the process until all of Waterhouse's hair was styled.

For the bangs, Birns softly brushed them out and then used TRESemmé Ultra Fine Hairspray to lock everything in. She feels lucky to be working the most important night in fashion, but especially with someone like Waterhouse. Having collaborated with her many times, Birns says the best part of teaming up together for events like the Met is hearing Waterhouse sing. "She is always humming or singing," Birns says. "It makes everything quite zen and relaxing."
