The 2024 Golden Globe Awards kicked off, well, awards season, which means red carpet looks are about to flood your Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, and truly any other social media feeds like nothing else. And, while you might think, “Sure, I love looking at those glam evening looks, but I can’t actually pull any of those pieces into my everyday wardrobe,” you’re sorely mistaken. That’s because you have to look beyond the overall look and hone in on a specific detail. Take Helen Mirren’s 2024 Golden Globes look as exhibit A.

Mirren walked the red carpet at the 81st annual Globes, looking like a regal fairy in her soft, pale lilac gown that had ruching on the bodice and a simple, floor-length skirt. Her hair was in a slicked-back low bun, the perfect pairing to her slightly more out-there attire. Sparkling diamonds added some welcomed glitz and glam, but the real drama was all thanks to that cape coat with big, bold bell sleeves. Yes, a volume-heavy hem is the one detail I'm certain you’ve been sleeping on — but it’s not too late to get in on the style.

A dress, shirt, blouse — or any other version those, really — can oftentimes feel too simple, too bland, or too meh; I’ve certainly dealt with this same frustration at least twice a week while getting dressed. That’s why I’ve started to buy classic pieces that have a little something-something to them that stand out on their own. Big, bold bell sleeves are one such example. The ultra-voluminous hem makes a statement and gives an outfit an eye-catching touch without interfering too much with the overall look. Take this simple Frame blouse as an example — it’s timeless thanks to the simple design, but the bell sleeves add a fun touch that would otherwise be missing.

Given fashion's fondness for all things big and voluminous, bell sleeves are a natural style addition that’s truly timeless and ageless, not to mention suitable for wear everywhere. Mirren wore her bell sleeves on the red carpet, but you can just as easily wear yours to the office, date night, or a Sunday of running errands.
