I’ve been living in my perfect black pants from Spanx (and yes, that’s they're actual name), and when I’m not in those, you can probably find me in jeans. But, with the holidays here, I’m spending more time at home with my family in Minnesota, where any regular pants have been thrown out the door. I’m in sweats 24/7, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. However, when I get back to real life and actually going to places that require, ahem, “real” clothes, I think I’m ready to add a new style of bottom to my rotation — all thanks to Emily Ratajkowski.

The supermodel was photographed out in New York City doing what she usually does on a daily basis: walk her dog. Of course, unlike me who wears sweats and oversized hoodies when I’m talking my baby Beau, a soft-coated wheaten terrier, out for his daily steps, EmRata looked ultra cool. Like, so cool, that her outfit combo has been cemented into my memory, especially since she made these “grandpa” pants so incredibly cool.

Ratajkowski opted for a long leather coat with shearling detailing on the lapels. It looked perfectly oversized, but also came with a belted waist if you want to give it a more cinched-in, form-fitting look. Underneath, she went with a simple black shirt, probably long-sleeve given the time of year, and the most unexpected dog walking shoes: bright red, snakeskin booties that are a moment. But TBH, it was her brown corduroys that really sparked joy.

Corduroy pants have a reputation of feeling very “grandpa,” and that’s maybe because you always saw your grandfather in the style of bottoms that can quickly lean a little, well, outdated and old. However, 2023’s corduroy are anything but outdated, thanks to updated silhouettes, like baggy legs or flare hemlines that feel much more current and cool. EmRata’s caramel-brown pair have a wide-leg, extra-long cut that’s very on-trend with this year’s pants’ trend (aka, the bigger and baggier the jeans, the better.)

What’s more, corduroy pants are usually designed from a slightly stretchy cotton-blend fabric that has the perfect weight to it, which is probably why we tend to see the pants crop up most often in the fall and winter.
